TRACE Biennial

AT RALPH'S GARAGE WITH RICHARD BELL’S ‘STILL...’, 2017 – TRACE 2017

Inkahoots has helped conceive, establish and design TRACE, a biennial exhibition and art auction in unexpected West End venues. The event raises needed funds for Community Plus’s vital services, and puts contemporary art where we live our everyday lives. The artists in TRACE are among Australia’s most important, and many have strong connections to the area.

Visit the art in a fruit shop, book stores, a barber, a record store, a bakery, and lots of other unlikely venues along Boundary and Vulture Streets in Brisbane’s West End. Then bid for the art online, with proceeds supporting the indispensable, indomitable Community Plus and their work with marginalised and vulnerable community members. The artists are also paid for their work.

TRACE is conceived as a de-institutionalised, temporary, multi-venue public art gallery. The art is encountered in unprecedented contexts, potentially provoking new ways of seeing both the art and the neighbourhood. Since the 1960s many artists have investigated different ways to exhibit art outside of purpose-built galleries and museums. TRACE draws from this trajectory of encountering art in ordinary and unexpected places.

Along with in-person guided walking tours led by the curator, local historians, artists and architects, we’ve developed TRACE Tracker. The phone app features artist biographies, artwork stories, artist interview videos, venue snapshots and more, all embedded in a geolocated self-guided walking tour.
