Siren Wall is a colourful graphic ‘skin’ for the western perimeter wall of the Roma Street Fire and Ambulance Station in Brisbane.
After visiting a local ambulance history museum, a palette of iconography was generated based on vintage emergency service vehicle sirens. These wonderful modernist industrial designs become bold geometric symbols when stylised as graphic icons. A recurring module motif was developed and applied to custom manufactured, retro reflective road signs enabling the tiling of large surfaces with a repeating graphic pattern.
During the day, the wall signals the location of one of the city’s key emergency service sites. At night, as the passing traffic’s headlights hit the wall, the retro reflective signs flare brightly, projecting a brief illuminated ‘warning’.
