Shimmering Shadows

Shimmering Shadows is a biography of the highly influential avant garde Jazz pianist, composer and teacher, Ran Blake, by Janet McFadden. Rand’s singular sound is a unique style combining blues, gospel, classical, and film noir influences, described by Rand himself as “a really dark solitude”.

For the book’s cover, we photographed the title typography through water filled glass, aiming for some of the musician’s dream-inspired noir sensibility.

Different effects were explored using shadow and water-filtered reflections until the right atmospheric combination of solidity and flux was captured.
